Biofill goes into standard stud framing during the rough-in phase. What that looks like depends on where you’re starting from.
The most common use. Biofill pours into standard stud walls or precast walls before finishing. No separate insulation, drywall, or vapor-barrier trade needed.
If you’re opening walls anyway for an addition or full gut renovation, Biofill installs during the same rough-in phase as insulation would.
Wall retrofits usually mean removing existing insulation and prepping the cavity. Best paired with a contractor who’s worked on hemp-lime wall assemblies.

Biofill is a professional-install product. It’s poured into standard wall framing, and proper mixing and pour technique directly affects cure strength and R-value, so we recommend working with a certified installer or an experienced hemp-building contractor. If you’re a hands-on homeowner, you can still buy Biofill directly and have your framer or general contractor place it — we’re happy to walk your contractor through the process. Our installer certification program (currently in development) will make it easier to find pros who’ve been trained on Biofill specifically.
Material line-item is higher than fiberglass. But because Biofill collapses several layers (insulation, sheathing prep, vapor barrier) into one pour, total installed cost tends to land close to conventional stud-frame construction — with a much healthier, longer-lasting wall.
Biofill sets in under an hour and can be poured at roughly the speed of a standard concrete pour. On a new build, expect 1–3 days of pour work versus 1–3 weeks for hand-tamped hempcrete alternatives.
Hemp-lime wall assemblies are recognized in the 2024 IRC Appendix BL and are being adopted state by state. If your local official hasn’t reviewed one yet, our Permit Kit gives them the code references and inspector FAQ they’ll need. Insurers are catching up — familiarity varies by carrier.
